Kidswear size grading is where a promising children’s clothing design becomes a dependable size range. It is not a matter of enlarging one pattern by the same percentage until a 6M garment turns into a 5T garment. A baby and a preschooler differ in posture, proportions, head size, movement, diaper needs, and the way a parent dresses them. A successful grading system has to reflect all of those changes while preserving the fit and visual identity of the original style.

When a brand sends us a sketch or tech pack, the most important sizing question is rarely, “How many centimeters should we add per size?” The better question is, “Who is this garment designed to fit, and how should the fit change as that child grows?”

That distinction affects everything that follows: the body measurement chart, base pattern, ease, neckline, rise, artwork scale, size-set sample, shrinkage allowance, and bulk inspection standard.

This guide explains how a professional kidswear manufacturer develops and grades sizes from 6M to 5T. You will see how we move from body data to finished garment measurements, why infant and toddler sizes need different rules, and how you can prevent the fit problems that often appear only after the complete size range has been produced.

Age-based labels are convenient for shoppers, but they are not universal technical standards.

In a typical North American range:

  • 6M, 9M, 12M, 18M, and 24M are infant size labels.
  • 2T, 3T, 4T, and 5T are toddler or little-kid size labels.
  • The number indicates an approximate age, not a guaranteed body measurement.

A 12M garment from one brand may fit similarly to another brand’s 9M or 18M. One label may design for a leaner customer, while another intentionally provides more room through the abdomen and seat. Some brands favor a close European silhouette; others build a relaxed fit for layering and active play.

That is why we do not treat “3T” as a complete instruction. We still need to know the intended body height, chest, waist, hip, head circumference, and other measurements relevant to the product.

A useful children’s clothing size chart may show only a few shopper-friendly values, but the manufacturer’s internal body chart is normally much more detailed.

Reliable sizing begins with anthropometric information: measurements that describe the size and proportions of the human body.

For U.S.-focused programs, the CDC Growth Charts are useful for understanding population-level patterns. The CDC recommends WHO growth standards from birth to age two and CDC charts for children aged two and older. The WHO Child Growth Standards also provide internationally recognized references for early childhood growth.

These sources are valuable, but they are clinical growth references—not finished apparel specifications.

For apparel design, we also review body-measurement standards. The official ASTM apparel body-measurement standards include tables for infant sizes through 24 months and little-kid sizes 2–6. ASTM describes these body measurements as baselines that still need to be interpreted according to fabric, movement ease, styling, and fit.

That last point is crucial. A standard can tell you about the intended body. It cannot decide how relaxed your sweatshirt should be, how much diaper room your romper needs, or how a stretch legging should recover after wear.

In practice, we combine several inputs:

  2. The brand’s target market and fit position
  3. Existing successful products
  4. Fit-model measurements
  5. Customer feedback and return data
  6. Fabric behavior
  7. Product-category requirements

The result is a brand-specific sizing system rather than a copied generic chart. Good kidswear size grading begins with this clear body definition, not with arbitrary increments.

A surprising number of fit disputes begin because the brand and factory are discussing different kinds of measurements without realizing it.

Body Measurements

Body measurements describe the child, not the clothing.

Examples include:

  • Full chest circumference
  • Natural waist circumference
  • Hip or seat circumference
  • Body height or recumbent length
  • Head circumference
  • Shoulder breadth
  • Arm length
  • Inside-leg length

The body measurement chart defines the customer the collection is intended to fit.

Finished Garment Measurements

Finished garment measurements describe the completed clothing.

Examples include:

  • Half-chest width measured flat
  • Body length from the highest shoulder point
  • Waistband width in a relaxed state
  • Sleeve length
  • Front and back rise
  • Inseam
  • Leg opening
  • Neck-opening width

These values include decisions about movement ease, design ease, stretch, layering, construction, and intended silhouette.

Suppose the target body chest is 52 cm. A relaxed woven shirt might have a finished chest circumference of 60 cm. A highly elastic rib top may measure less than 52 cm when relaxed because it is designed with negative ease. Both garments can fit the same child.

Pattern Measurements

Pattern measurements describe the paper or digital pieces before sewing.

They may include:

  • Seam allowances
  • Hem turnbacks
  • Pleat intake
  • Gathering
  • Elastic reduction
  • Construction extensions
  • Shrinkage compensation

The pattern measurement is therefore not always equal to the finished garment measurement.

When you prepare a tech pack, identify whether every number is a body measurement, a finished garment measurement, or a pattern dimension. “Chest: 54 cm” is not precise enough unless the measuring method is also stated.

Before starting kidswear size grading, we define who the clothing is intended to fit.

A useful brief answers questions such as:

  • Which country or region is the main market?
  • Is the fit slim, regular, relaxed, or oversized?
  • Is the range unisex or style-specific?
  • Which sizes are expected to be worn over diapers?
  • Will customers layer clothing underneath?
  • Is the product everyday clothing, activewear, occasionwear, outerwear, or sleepwear?
  • Does the brand already have a proven size chart?
  • Which sizes and styles generate the most fit-related returns?

This is also where a custom kids clothing manufacturer should challenge assumptions rather than silently applying a factory-default chart.

One situation we see often is a buyer asking for “standard U.S. sizing.” The phrase sounds clear, but it still leaves major decisions open. Does the brand want a generous mass-market fit? A boutique fit? A fitted silhouette with stretch? A relaxed shape designed to last through a growth period?

The manufacturer can recommend a direction, but the brand should approve the customer profile before pattern development begins.

The master body chart defines the intended body for each size in the range.

A 6M-to-5T program might include:

Other brands use combined age ranges, such as 6–9M or 2–3Y. Some use height labels, such as 68, 74, 80, 86, 92, 98, 104, and 110 cm.

The label format is a merchandising choice. Underneath it, every size still needs a technical body definition.

The technical chart may include more measurements than the chart you publish on the product page. Your customer-facing guide should remain easy to use; your internal chart needs enough detail to build and check the garment properly.

Brands sometimes send us several competitor charts and ask for an average. Competitor research is useful, but a simple average can produce a chart with no clear fit identity.

The brands may use different:

  • Product categories
  • Ease allowances
  • Size-label definitions

A better method is to compare the market, then make a deliberate choice.

You might decide that your collection should be:

  • More generous through the diaper area
  • Longer through the torso
  • Narrower through the shoulder
  • Relaxed in toddler sizes
  • Designed for layering
  • More fitted in occasionwear

A strong size chart reflects the customer you want to serve, not the mathematical midpoint of unrelated brands.

One of the most important rules in kidswear size grading is that the increment system should not remain identical from 6M through 5T.

An infant and a preschooler are not the same shape at different scales.

Infant Proportions

Infants generally have:

  • Relatively large heads
  • Shorter necks
  • Rounded torsos
  • Narrow shoulders
  • Short limbs
  • Fuller abdomens
  • Diaper volume
  • Limited ability to assist while dressing

A well-designed infant garment therefore needs easy access, soft construction, and enough room for sitting, crawling, lying down, and diaper changes.

Toddler Proportions

As children enter toddler and little-kid sizes:

  • Their bodies become longer and leaner
  • Their limbs lengthen
  • Their posture becomes more upright
  • Shoulder structure develops
  • Diaper bulk reduces or disappears
  • Movement becomes more active
  • Functional pockets and styling details become more relevant

A 5T pattern should not look like an enlarged baby pattern. It should reflect the proportions and movement of an older child.

One of the most common sizing questions from buyers is, “Why do we need both 24M and 2T?”

The age overlap is real, but the fit logic can differ.

A typical 24M garment may include:

  • More diaper room
  • A fuller seat
  • A shorter, wider silhouette
  • Easier dressing features
  • More infant-oriented proportions

A typical 2T garment may include:

  • Reduced diaper allowance
  • A slightly longer and leaner shape
  • More upright toddler proportions
  • Different pocket positioning
  • Pull-on rather than infant-access construction

There is no rule that every brand must make a dramatic difference between these sizes. The important point is to decide intentionally. Duplicating one pattern under two labels creates confusion rather than a real size transition.

A base size is the first size used to develop and fit the pattern.

For a narrow range, one base can be sufficient. For 6M to 5T, two base sizes often provide better control:

  • An infant base, such as 12M
  • A toddler base, such as 3T

This approach reflects the shift in body proportions.

Why 12M Is a Practical Infant Base

A 12M sample sits near the center of many infant ranges. It lets us evaluate:

  • Diaper room
  • Torso length
  • Neck access
  • Sleeve proportion
  • Sitting and crawling comfort

The pattern can then be graded down to 6M and up toward 24M, with specific corrections where needed.

Why 3T Is a Practical Toddler Base

A 3T sample sits near the middle of the 2T–5T range. It helps us evaluate:

  • Body length
  • Sleeve length
  • Rise and inseam
  • Active movement
  • Pocket scale

The best base size still depends on the product, available fit models, and the brand’s key selling sizes.

The pattern maker translates the body chart and design into garment pieces.

The starting point may be:

  • A brand block
  • A factory block
  • A buyer-supplied pattern
  • A reference garment
  • A new draft based on body measurements

A block is a basic fit pattern used as the foundation for future styles. Reliable blocks help a brand maintain fit consistency across T-shirts, dresses, sweatshirts, pants, bodysuits, and related products.

Fit Ease and Design Ease

Fit ease allows the child to breathe, sit, reach, bend, and dress comfortably.

Design ease creates the silhouette. An oversized sweatshirt includes much more design ease than a fitted rib top.

For a non-stretch garment, the logic can be expressed simply:

Body measurement + fit ease + design ease = finished garment measurement

The actual calculation varies by measurement and product.

Negative Ease in Stretch Clothing

Leggings, stretch bodysuits, and fitted rib tops may measure smaller than the body when relaxed. This is negative ease.

The amount depends on:

  • Fabric stretch
  • Stretch recovery
  • Fabric weight
  • Construction
  • Desired fit
  • Comfort
  • Wash performance

Two fabrics labeled 95% cotton and 5% elastane can behave very differently. One may recover cleanly after stretching, while another becomes baggy at the knees or neckline.

We therefore test the actual fabric rather than assuming the fiber composition tells the entire story.

Diaper allowance affects more than hip width.

It can change:

  • Seat width
  • Front rise
  • Back rise
  • Total crotch length
  • Bodysuit length
  • Leg opening
  • Snap position
  • Waistband behavior

A legging can look wide enough when laid flat and still pull down at the back because the rise is too short. A bodysuit can match the chest specification and still strain at the snaps because the torso does not accommodate the diaper.

Disposable and Cloth Diapers

Reusable cloth diapers may require more volume than many disposable diapers. If your customer base commonly uses cloth diapers, tell the manufacturer early.

Useful questions include:

  • Which sizes will be worn over diapers?
  • Is the product fitted or relaxed?
  • Should it accommodate cloth diapers?
  • Is it daywear or overnight clothing?
  • When should the diaper allowance begin to reduce?

A brand may choose full allowance in infant sizes, reduced allowance in 24M or 2T, and a standard toddler seat from 3T onward.

Dressing Access

Babies cannot help pull a tight neckline over their heads. Infant styles may need:

  • Envelope shoulders
  • Shoulder snaps
  • Back-neck openings
  • Stretch rib
  • Wider necklines
  • Front openings

A neckline can look attractive on a flat sample and still fail during a head-passage test. This is one of those practical issues that a measurement chart alone cannot fully predict.

Professional pattern grading is not proportional scaling.

If you enlarged every part of the garment by the same percentage, you would also enlarge seam allowances, button diameters, pocket openings, artwork, hem depths, and label placements. That would create an awkward and inefficient product.

Grade rules control how individual pattern points move from one size to the next.

A point may move:

  • Horizontally
  • Vertically
  • In both directions
  • Not at all

For example:

  • Body width grows at the side seam.
  • Shoulder width grows near the armhole.
  • Body length grows at the hem and sometimes through the torso.
  • Neck width changes only slightly.
  • Seam allowances remain unchanged.
  • Artwork may use grouped sizes rather than nine separate versions.

Horizontal and Vertical Growth Are Different

Children often gain length faster than width in parts of this range. Sleeve length, body length, and inseam may therefore need larger relative changes than chest width.

A grading plan should separately define:

  • Width increments
  • Length increments
  • Circumference increments
  • Feature placement
  • Decorative scaling

Grade Rules Can Change Mid-Range

The chest increment from 6M to 9M does not have to equal the increment from 4T to 5T.

Variable rules may be used for:

This extra work produces a more natural progression than forcing one repeated increment across every size. At this point, kidswear size grading becomes a controlled set of design decisions rather than a mechanical enlargement exercise.

In kidswear size grading, several measurements deserve especially careful review.

Chest Width

Chest width affects comfort, layering, armhole balance, and silhouette. Too little growth makes upper sizes tight; too much makes them unexpectedly boxy.

Body Length

Body length often grows more visibly than width. The tech pack must state the measurement method—commonly from the highest shoulder point or center-back neck.

Dresses may need separate rules for bodice length, skirt length, and total length.

Shoulder Width

Excessive shoulder grading can create an unplanned dropped shoulder. Insufficient grading can restrict movement or distort the sleeve.

Relaxed styles may intentionally use a dropped shoulder, but it should remain visually controlled.

Sleeve Length

State whether sleeve length is measured from the shoulder seam, center-back neck, or underarm.

Cuff construction also matters. A long sleeve with a stable rib cuff can blouse naturally at the wrist; the same sleeve with a loose opening may cover the hand.

Neck Opening

Infants have relatively large heads. A small change in neck width or stretch can determine whether the garment is easy or frustrating to dress.

The neck should be evaluated for:

  • Relaxed appearance
  • Maximum stretch
  • Recovery
  • Head passage
  • Seam durability

Front and Back Rise

Rise is critical for diapers, sitting, squatting, and waistband position. The back rise is usually longer because it travels over the seat.

Inseam and Outseam

As the range moves toward 5T, leg length becomes increasingly important. Knee position, cuff dimensions, short length, and full-length hem position should all remain proportional.

Armhole and Sleeve Cap

The armhole and sleeve cap must be graded as a system. Changing one without correcting the other can cause twisting, tightness, excess easing, or sewing difficulty.

A technically correct size range can still look unbalanced if design elements are scaled mechanically.

Pockets

A practical pocket plan may use:

  • One size for 6M–12M
  • One size for 18M–3T
  • One size for 4T–5T

This avoids a giant pocket on 6M and an undersized pocket on 5T. Placement also needs to move as the body grows.

Prints and Embroidery

Artwork can use:

  • One universal size
  • Two or three grouped sizes
  • Separate versions for each size
  • Percentage scaling with manual correction

A small chest logo may work across the complete range. A large front graphic may need several versions.

When developing printed basics through a children’s T-shirt manufacturer, confirm the print dimensions and placement for the smallest and largest sizes—not only the base sample.

Buttons, Snaps, and Zippers

Hardware does not normally grow with every size. The same snap diameter may be used throughout the range, while the quantity or spacing changes.

Zippers may be grouped by garment length.

Hoods, Collars, Ruffles, and Trims

A hood must relate to head size, neckline, shoulder width, and garment weight. A ruffle may need more fullness as the body grows. A collar should continue to sit correctly around the neckline.

These details require visual review, not just spreadsheet increments.

A finished measurement chart is only reliable if the production fabric behaves as expected.

Shrinkage Is Directional

A knit may shrink 5% in length and 2% in width. The pattern maker must compensate by direction rather than adding one universal percentage.

The logic also depends on when the garment is measured and sold. A garment-washed product may have a different pattern allowance from an unwashed product expected to shrink slightly during home laundering.

Different Fabrics May Need Different Patterns

A cotton jersey T-shirt and polyester interlock T-shirt should not automatically share one pattern.

Differences in stretch, recovery, drape, thickness, and shrinkage affect fit.

Even color and finishing can change fabric behavior. We compare bulk fabric with the approved sample material before cutting, especially when the style is fitted or the tolerances are tight.

The first fit sample helps us evaluate:

A fit model should match the target body measurements, not merely the age printed on the label.

A three-year-old who measures closer to the 4T body chart is not an appropriate 3T fit model.

A live fit model reveals information a mannequin cannot:

Questions We Ask During a Fit Review

For tops and dresses:

  • Does the neckline pass over the head comfortably?

For pants:

  • Does the waistband stay in place?
  • Is the back rise long enough?
  • Can the child sit and squat?

For bodysuits and rompers:

  • Is the torso long enough?
  • Are the snaps under tension?
  • Is diaper changing practical?
  • Do the leg openings leave marks?

We approve the base fit before grading. Otherwise, every base-pattern problem is copied into the full range.

A size-set sample is one of the most important controls in the kids clothing manufacturing process.

For a 6M-to-5T range, an efficient first set may include:

  • 6M
  • 12M
  • 24M
  • 3T
  • 5T

These sizes reveal the bottom, infant midpoint, infant-to-toddler transition, toddler base, and top of the range.

What the Size Set Reveals

A 12M base sample may look excellent while:

  • The 6M neck opening is visually too large
  • The 24M rise is too short
  • The 3T sleeve needs more length
  • The 5T shoulder becomes too wide
  • A pocket overwhelms the smallest size
  • A print looks undersized on the largest size

This is why we do not assume that a correct base size guarantees correct grading. Kidswear size grading must be checked on physical anchor sizes, not only on a digital pattern screen.

Review the Nested Pattern

Pattern makers often overlay all graded sizes in a nested view. Smooth, logical grade lines help reveal whether the points move consistently.

An irregular jump may indicate:

Digital software makes grading faster, but it does not replace technical judgment.

The finished garment chart lists the points of measurement for every size.

There is no honest universal set of finished measurements that fits every product. A stretch rib top, basic T-shirt, sweatshirt, party dress, and padded jacket all need different garment charts.

The chart should define:

  • Measuring method
  • Tolerance
  • Flat or circumference measurement
  • Relaxed or stretched elastic condition
  • Before-wash or after-wash condition
  • Curved-seam or straight-line method

Set Realistic Tolerances

Mass-produced garments cannot be held to zero variation.

The appropriate tolerance depends on:

  • Fabric stability
  • Garment size
  • Construction
  • Measurement importance
  • Production method

A 1 cm difference is much more significant on a 6M neckline than on a 5T body length. Critical measurements need tighter control, while less sensitive measurements can allow practical manufacturing variation.

Extremely tight tolerances do not automatically create a better product. They can create unnecessary inspection failures without improving real-world fit.

Representative samples should be washed using the intended care method.

Sleepwear

Sleepwear fit must be developed with the product classification, fabric, comfort, and destination-market requirements in mind. A fitted sleep set and a relaxed lounge set do not use the same pattern logic.

Jackets and Outerwear

Outerwear requires layering ease and enough movement through the shoulder and armhole.

When working with a children’s jacket manufacturer, the fit should be tested over the type of clothing the child will actually wear underneath.

Accurate patterns are only the beginning. Bulk production is where kidswear size grading is either protected or gradually lost. The factory still has to protect the measurements through cutting, sewing, pressing, washing, and packing.

Check Bulk Fabric

Before cutting, the team checks:

  • Width
  • Weight
  • Stretch
  • Recovery
  • Shrinkage
  • Shade
  • Defects
  • Relaxation needs

If the bulk fabric differs materially from the sample fabric, the pattern or process may need adjustment.

Control Fabric Spreading and Cutting

Stretch fabric should not be pulled during spreading. Pattern versions, grain direction, notches, shade grouping, and bundle identification must remain controlled.

Measure the First Pieces

At the beginning of sewing, the quality team checks completed first pieces to confirm:

  • Seam allowances
  • Elastic tension
  • Construction method
  • Pressing effect
  • Label placement
  • Finished measurements

Use In-Line Measurement Checks

Inspectors should measure different sizes, bundles, operators, and production periods—not the same convenient sample repeatedly.

This catches gradual variation before it affects the complete order.

Inspect the Smallest and Largest Sizes

Final inspection should include 6M and 5T, where grading or handling problems are easiest to see.

Checking only the base size can miss an incorrect neckline at the bottom of the range or an excessive shoulder at the top.

Using One Increment for Every Size

This ignores the transition from infant to toddler proportions.

Better approach: Use variable grade rules and separate base blocks where appropriate.

Treating 24M and 2T as Identical

This can create too much or too little diaper room.
